I should have extended my stay in Kandy. One day was not enough to explore this picturesque city, which is famous for its tea gardens and the Temple of the Tooth Relic.
There are many amazing places which I missed. But, I still got to meet some very interesting people, relish Kandy’s delicious food and visit its colorful market. I stayed in a very comfortable hostel and the street food was finger-lickin good.

The major part of my one-day stay in the city was spent exploring Kandy’s Central Market, where one can find from fruit to wine. It was a bit crowded, but that’s not a problem if you are a Delhitie.
I visited the Temple of the Tooth Relic and soaked up the beauty of the Kandy Lake, which is also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk. This artificial lake is situated in the heart of the city.
In the end, a bar was needed to unwind after a hectic but very beautiful day. I approached a gentleman to find me a good place and he told me to follow him. After a five minute-walk, we were standing outside a restaurant-cum bar. The gentleman smiled at me and said: “Welcome to my bar.” “You own this,” I asked with surprise. “O yes,” he replied.
I entered the bar, and the first thing I noticed was its rustic decoration. Very artistic and well-maintained. I hit the bar a little too early and so was the only guest.
I ordered a beer and few snacks, and my perfect evening came to a blissful end.
I left Kandy next morning.

From villa to hostel, I experimented all kinds of accommodation during my recent Sri Lankan sojourn. Staying at a hostel has its own charm. You get to meet a whole bunch of new people from different countries. Unfortunately, it did not happen this time as I traveled in the off season. Most of the hostels were half empty due to the country’s extreme hot weather. In Colombo, I stayed at ClockInn Delhiwala and I must say it is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed. Be it food or cleanliness, this hostel deserves a big thumbs up.
In Weligama, an auto driver took me to a hotel where I was the only guest. Although, the host was nice, I was bit paranoid as there was no other guests in the hostel.
And in Bentota, I had a brief conversation with a boy, who took me to a villa, which is running by an old couple. Like Weligama, I was the only guest at their villa. I stayed there just for a night. I had a very long and interesting conversation with the owner over a cigarette break.
In Galle, I had stayed in a sea-side hostel – Coco Palm Beach Hostel – with fewer guests. All of them opted for private rooms, while I stayed in a shared room. Apart from me, the hostel welcomed two girls from France and a couple from Britain.
If you visit Galle, I strongly recommend to stay in this hostel.
Now let’s talk about famous hill station Kandy. I really liked this spacious and colorful hostel, the Backpackers VIBE, which is approximately 4km away from Kandy’s railway station. Though the staff is nice, the amenities are not worth mentioning. The shared rooms are just OK. They also have a bar, where you can chill in the evening with few drinks.
So this is how I spent my days in Sri Lanka. Do let me know whether you liked these places 🙂

It is not possible for me to carry my bulky DSLR every time. And in many tricky situations, I completely rely upon my mobile – Mi4, which has become a reliable travel tool for me over a period of many years. I had clicked various pictures of beautiful spots of Colombo from moving buses. So the snaps may fall short on picture quality, but I am confident the images will still catch your attention.

Galle Fort is replete with cute cafes, colorful houses and lots of boutiques. One can easily cover the whole Galle Fort on foot. I managed to cover almost 80% of this area on foot, capturing the beauty of this picturesque town. From Lighthouse to famous All Saints’ Church, Galle managed to impress me with its rich history. In every corner of the street, one can spot either a charming building or a cafe. Galle must be included in your Sri Lanka itinerary.

Defying extremely hot and humid climate, I decided to explore Galle Fort, one of Sri Lanka’s major tourist attractions.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort was originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century to defend Galle.
As I have captured numerous images of this fort, I would like to split up this article in two parts.
Thanks to Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka, the monument has been remarkably maintained. I will suggest you to visit this place between the months of October and March.

Bentota – a small resort town located in Sri Lanka – woos a large number of tourists from all parts of the globe. Pristine beach and watersports activities are the major attractions for the tourists visiting this place.
Situated just 65 kilometer away from South of Colombo, Bentota’s clean and quiet environment were the main factors that motivated me to visit this place. My brief one day visit was enough to explore this tiny town. It was off season when I landed in Bentota. As expected I found a handful of tourists, relaxing on the beach.
Soon after deboarding the train, I had a brief conversation with a local guy, who guided me to a villa. The tidy vila, owned by a couple, was quite impressive from inside. To my surprise, I was the only guest staying at their villa.
During my stay in Bentota, I spent most of the time on the beach and looking at the waves, which were crashing on the shores. Adding further joy to my journey to this place were some chilled local beer, fresh air and quiet environment.
If you are coming from Colombo, then I would strongly recommend you to board a train.
I guess it took around one hour to reach Bentota from the national capital. Train journeys in Sri Lanka are quite enjoyable. If you make a visit in off season, you will get plenty of accommodations at cheap prices. If you are making a trip between October-March then be prepared to pay more.
