Welcome to Umiam Lake! – Perhaps Shillong’s most famous tourist spot.

Located 15km to the North of Shillong, the lake is a part of a dam built as a first Hydel Power Project by the Assam State Electricity Board in Meghalaya. The lake and dam cover an area of more than 220 square km.

Its pristine beauty attracts tourists from all parts of the country.

The lake justifies its popular name “Bara Pani” or the Big Water, as its size is bigger than the country of Liechtenstein in terms of area.

Apart from the scenic views, tourists visiting the place can also enjoy water sports activities ranging from kayaking to water cycling. However, I kept myself limited to enjoying the scenic views. The lake is also home to a spectacular garden named Lum Nehru Park. This place is easily accessible to the tourists. I took a shared cab from the main center of Shillong and it took 30 minutes to reach the place. I kept myself busy for almost an hour in enjoying the unparalleled beauty of this vast lake.

Nongriat’s Double-Decker Root Bridge

I decided to explore the world-famous double-decker root bridge in Nongriat, Meghalaya after reading a couple of very interesting articles and seeing some wonderful images of it on Internet.

I knew it would be a treacherous journey, but I had already made my mind.
The trip to this unique place was part of my Meghalaya sojourn. The owner of the guest house in Cherapunji, where I was staying, told me that I can explore this place on my own and that no guide was needed. So next day, I hired a cab to Tryna village and reached there at around 9:30am.

Then started the first trek of my life – the trek to the root bridge. The trek covered over 3,000 steps and a couple of iron and small root bridges.

It took me approximately 2 hours to cover this 3km arduous journey (one way). A couple of small shops have been built where you can buy some snacks, tea, coffee, bottled water etc.

Surrounded by dense forest, the 250-year-old bridge is located in a small village ‘Nongriat.’

According to the owner of my guest house, the man-made bridge was built to help local people cross over the river. I was mesmerized by the natural beauty surrounding the double-decker bridge and even went father to see the natural pool.

It was indeed a good idea as the crystal-clear water of the pool left me gob-smacked. The enchanting natural beauty around the place mesmerized me and left a deep imprint on me.

I trekked from one mountain to another and what an exhilarating experience it was. I was very tired while returning and might have taken hundreds of mini breaks. If you ever visit Meghalaya, make sure you don’t miss this beautiful ‘tiny paradise.’ Just do keep in mind that physical strength and good stamina is a must for this trek. Also, try to start your journey little earlier so that you won’t see crowds. When I reached the place, I found only few local workers, who were collecting pebbles.

Umngot River: Pure & Pristine

After seeing the beautiful images of Umngot river over a thousand times on Social media, I finally made up my mind to see it in real. I hired a cab from Shillong and headed to Umngot river, which lies at Dawki, a small town situated near the Indo-Bangladesh border. It took me nearly two hours to reach the place.

It is probably one of the cleanest rivers in our country. The emerald green water, so pure and pristine. Surrounded by thick forest, the beauty of the river is unparalleled. It is a must visit place for any traveler. My driver told me that the river becomes crystal clear during the December-January period. Apart from enjoying the incredible view, one can take a boat ride, and do camping next to the lake. Local tour operators provide camping equipment.

How to reach this place: This pristine river is located 95km away from Shillong. There are many options to visit this place. One can take a bus from the capital city to Dawaki. Megahlaya tourism department also conducts tours to this place. Their office is situated in the famous Police Bazar. I took a cab as I had very limited time and wanted to see many things.

Meghalaya – The Land Of Exotic Flowers

I arrived in Meghalaya during the monsoon season and many may say this is not the right time to visit this North-Eastern state.
But as I had expected, the rains made the whole place a lot more beautiful. As I reached the state, it started raining and the lush green tress and vibrant flowers started dancing, as if welcoming me.
I could not recognize most of the flowers, but surely they were the most colorful ones I have ever seen in my whole life.
I snapped them in various parts of Meghalaya ranging from Cherrapunji to Shillong. Be it shape or color, their charming beauty made my journey more enjoyable.
